So I figured with modern day LED technologies that there had to be a great replacement. This can be a terrific item for anybody preparing for an emergency or helping an elderly or handicapped person be prepared. You'll feel far better knowing your loved ones are safe. I will commence by saying that all my causes for getting this lantern are according to ease of use & safety since my husband and I are both legally blind. That being said; here is what I've learned: Color: I bought the orange lantern because it stands out from most surroundings you might place it in; therefore one would be less likely to knock it over or simply not be able to find it (this can be a bigger problem than one might think). The bottom has a rubber grip also making it more difficult to turn over. The power button stands out well & is easy to push. I read one review about the power button not having a "clicking" sound; it does not have a loud one, but the click is definitely there. I personally don't find this to be "necessary". This really is a superb lantern. It give a lot of light and it looks quite cool. The instastart works great. I like how the base fits on the lantern with out a case in contrast to my old one.Be cautious the leading screw stays hot for longer then the rest of the lantern. LED model--pros: nice redesign, about the same size but far more stable than fluorescent model; uses four D's for lengthy battery life; enough light to read by if LED's are positioned close to reading material; plastic appears rugged; LED's should last forever; has a gentle single-LED yellow night light;--cons: not waterproof, not extremely bright. IMHO this Camp Chef Cree unit is an exact copy of another model that Amazon sells which is identified by several brands: `Flip' `Eureka', etc. I've the 185 lumens Eureka Flip version, however it had an annoying function that I didn't like (as a lot of reviewers have mentioned)...that useless blinking LED that just drains the batteries. It's advertised at 70 lumens, while other similar size lanterns with 3 AA batteries rarely 'boast' about any illumination measurement. However, this one does have ONE 'configuration' advantage over other similar-priced mini lantern models. You can remove the light diffuser, and hang it as a bare-bulb light, upside down, from the top of your tent (or house ceiling if you've pre-placed a hook in the middle of the room's ceiling). The minimal operating instructions don't tell you that you must press the button on the lantern 3 times, then a blue light in the round window above the button on the lantern comes on. Then you can use the remote control! I had to pay to mail the first "defective" lantern back. Only by experimenting for a LONG time with the 2nd lantern did I discover the trick to getting the remote control to work! Also, the parts list said the remote control included 2 AAA batteries- it did not. Once you master the remote control, it works as described by the others. Just bought this at Home Depot for 24.97, it works great with plenty of lighting. Not built cheap like some LED lights which try to illuminate a room but only hurt your eyes. 8 "D" batteries is made for serious business. Fairly good the hand crank seems to work to charge along with the solar charges also. Not as much light as the old fashioned bulbs, but then they draw too much power to make use of with solar.
